CHILDREN’S ROOMS – LIGHTING TIPS & IDEAS
1.USING PENDANTS FOR OVERHEAD AMBIENT LIGHTING
Natural light is essential to any space but it’s even more important with children’s bedrooms and playrooms. You’ll need to make sure their room receives as much natural light as possible so that they and you can move around safely, especially when they reach the Lego stage!
For grey days and evening play, ensure overhead ambient lighting, whether it is in the form of a pendant or spotlights, is sufficient to illuminate the room so they can go about their daily activities such as play and dressing.
TIP: If you install a dimmer switch or smart bulb with dimmable capabilities, you’ll be able to create some wind down time to their day.
If they’re fortunate enough to have a larger size room you could highlight their play areas with hanging pendants like the one above from Urban Cottage Industries, which will provide enough light for them to play safely.
2. SET THE MOOD FOR WIND DOWN TIME
It’s not just the grown-ups in the home who benefit from mood lighting. Creating the right ambience in the evening serves as a signal to your little one that it’s time to calm down for the day and prepare for bed. Installing a dimmer switch or smart bulb with dimmable capabilities are easy ways of introducing this evening routine. Both allow you to create a cosy atmosphere in your child’s bedroom.
3. USE A LAMP OR LAMPSHADE TOE TIE IN WITH THE THEME OR COLOUR SCHEME
Fun bedside lamps are a decorative yet functional feature in a child’s room. They can be used to tie in a theme or colour scheme and are useful for bedtime stories. Remember, the lighter the shade, the more light shines through, so keep this in mind when selecting a design.
4. CREATE A COSY DEN
Another way to highlight a space and create a cosy corner is with some LED Fairy Lights. This will be a warm, comfortable and cosy place for your little one to wind down and relax while reading a bedtime story or for evening play before bed time.
5. USE A NOVELTY LIGHT AS A NIGHT LIGHT
Novelty lighting fixtures are fun to look at but they’re more functional than you think. They provide the room with additional illumination and create an element of interest. These often whimsical designs add a sense of wonder to a room and can make for ideal night lights. Novelty fixtures offer a soft glow and create a sense of safety and comfort for little ones who can’t fall asleep in complete darkness. Certain designs, such as lava lamps and glitter lamps, are soothing and hypnotic to look at and have been said to make children (and adults!) drowsy before bedtime.
